Protect Your Skin this Summer

25 July 2024

This month is Ultraviolet (UV) Safety Awareness Month, and we want to share some tips on how to keep your skin safe this summer! As the hotter months come around, UV radiation is at its peak, posing potential health risks. It’s important to protect yourself and spread awareness about the harmful effects that UV radiation can have on your skin and long-term health. Read on to learn more:

What Are UV Rays?

Ultraviolet radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that comes directly from the sun. These rays have short wavelengths that are produced at a higher frequency which can lead to harmful effects if overexposed.

Negative Side Effects of UV Radiation Exposure

Over exposure to UV radiation could result in negative effects on the skin such as:

  • Skin Cancer

UV radiation is the cause of up to 90% of skin cancers, resulting in precancerous lesions or tumors that can be found on the body and spread to other parts of the body if left untreated.

  • Sunburn

Sunburn is a short-term sign of overexposure to UV radiation. This can be caused by tanning outside or using tanning beds and lead to redness, swelling, pain, and blisters.

  • Premature Aging

Premature aging, otherwise known as photoaging, can damage your skin cells and result in visible skin changes over the years. This can lead to sunspots, collagen loss, wrinkles, fine lines, and dryness.

  • Eye Damage

Eye damage is caused by overexposure to UV rays that can lead to damage in the lens proteins and worsen your vision. Other side effects could include eyelid cancers, noncancerous growths, cornea damage, and severe eye sunburn.

  • Immune System Issues

Immune system issues can occur from overexposure to UV radiation as it can deplete the skin’s natural defenses. As a result, your body could potentially have a difficult time fighting off certain diseases.

Tips for Protecting Your Skin

  • Apply Sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect your skin from UV radiation. Not only does it prevent sunburn but it also reduces the risk of skin cancer, reduces premature aging, improves skin texture, and keeps your skin complexion even. The best sunscreen for UV protection is one with SPF 30 or higher.

  • Wear protective clothing

Sun protective clothing can be beneficial when trying to avoid UV radiation and the negative effects it can have on your skin. Fabrics such as nylon and polyester do a good job at creating a physical barrier between your skin and the sun. This not only reduces your skin from getting sunburn, but also prevents the long-term effects such as skin cancer.

  • Limit sun exposure

It’s important to limit the amount of time you spend in the sun, especially during the summer months. Ways to do this could be to seek shade when possible or avoid peak sun hours during the day to reduce the amount of UV radiation that you’re exposed to.
